A few pods behind, but the west coast of Michigan is Gods country, especially in the summer… just gorgeous, freshwater paradise, and I would recommend it to anyone who had the ability to relocate anywhere they desired. I certainly would myself if I wasn't otherwise tied down.
Were you to visit the west side of the state, you would likely be surprised with some similarities to the California coast or Portuguese coast. The way the Lower Peninsula interacts with Lake Michigan, it’s sort of a microclimate of those two coasts (albeit with much colder winters.) As a result, certain grapes grow well here (although I am not much of a wine enthusiast, so I couldn’t tell you which ones.) On that note though, there might be a market for your wife to get into, business-wise.
It’s certainly much cheaper than other areas of the country and you could probably get some amazing property here (though as expected, it’s getting pricier by the year). There’s all kinds of amazing towns up and down the coast, South Haven, Grand Haven, Ludington, Manistee, Petoskey, and Traverse City which at this point is a small metropolis (and almost too big in the summer to my taste for visiting purposes, but would probably suit actual day to day life pretty well).
Traverse City has a regional airport which flies direct to a handful of major US cities, including Laguardia, and Traverse City has a very nice Catholic school: Traverse City St. Francis. If you go to one of the aforementioned smaller cities, the public schools aren’t as stifling there as the larger city public schools, yet not so small in enrollment that they are stifling in that way, either. You could also just decide instead to ship her off to Interlochen like all of our elite overlords, which is just down the road, but I would guess at this point in the story, that particular school is likely devoid of diverse thought.
Thanks for the suggestion, Tony. I've actually flown into Traverse City, my uncle (a big gun nut) had a place on Lake Michigan, near the Canadian border 30 years ago. One drawback is cold af in winter. (Actually drove his snowmobiles up there in 1995).
If you are moving back to the US the Raleigh area is pretty decent. Short drive to Wilmington on the coast as well. But the price of everything sucks for sure.
"Yeah, and you're all fucking wrong." Love that. So true! And they all took their boosters while they call you crazy.
Plus on the subject of charity, I'm a firm believer there should be no nonprofit status. Everyone should pay taxes - churches, charities, universities, hospitals, etc
Actual track record of being right means nothing, beliefs of their peers everything. And yeah, ideally far fewer taxes for anyone, but barring that, equal no matter how much of a do-gooder you purport to be.

But the summers are worth the wait!

We can't go back to the moon because it is not a place we can go to begin with. I dont even think it's a rock anymore.
