I wonder if the Elon "humanity is a bootloader" topic comes from these concepts of the levels of civilization/types 0-7 from the Kardashev Scale where in order to advance far beyond a 1 we'd need to more or less shed the body. I think most people would consider it a sci-fi concept that's fun to discuss and imagine and nothing more. At a minimum it's so far off in the future that none of us would ever even begin to find out.
Yea, I'm certainly not suggesting I agree with pushing humanity in that direction. I think part of the value of human life is the fragile and fleeting nature. If we can just load ourselves into machines and transfer from one container to the next with very little cost, we'd change the essence of what we are and how we feel to the point where everything we care about now would probably cease to matter.
